Boy's Mentoring Program

15 boys from EMHS attended a training and induction day in preparation for their role as mentors. Each boy will work with a stage 3 boy from the local primary schools and assist that boy in the repair and restoration of push bikes. The interaction between the two boys is to be overseen by a male community volunteer. This mentoring program is based upon a model that has been successfully running at EMHS for the last 2 years.

Yr 10 boys and their mentors.

The boys from year 10 learnt about interpersonal relationships, mentoring techniques, powerpoint presentations and specialised bike knowledge. Presenters at the training day were teachers from EMHS (Paul McCabe and Mike Maxworthy), Country Area Program Computer Consultant (Colin Gould) and owner of the Fishpen Bikeshop ( Cycle'n' Surf) David Jones. Attending the day were also the community volunteers Jim Wheatley, Don Limbach, Bruce Morley and David Wait also in attendance were Phil Jackson and Bob Arthur from EMHS.

The day was enjoyed by all as it was relevant, informative and interesting. Special thanks is conveyed to those men who volunteered their time and assisted in making the day quite special for the boys.

The Federal Government of Australia has assisted the EMHS program by allocating money from the Boys Education Lighthouse Program in Schools (BELS). A portion of this money was used to allow the training / induction day to occur. Another BELS funded day is to occur in the near future when EMHS will host a Boys Workshop. This day will feature Dr Affrica Taylor from Canberra University. Dr Taylor fulfills the role of critical friend. Her role is to analysis and critically study the EMHS program. She will then be able to advise and assist those people who are involved in the program with the aim of making the program more relevant to the needs of boys and be compliant with current educational research. The Boys Workshop is to be held at Pambula Merimbula Golf Club on March 18th.
